The Holly and the Ivy

This is a song that I never quite understood and I thought that I’d try to explain it in my own words (which may not be the best words and explanation.)

The holly and the ivy,

Holly- a Christmas plant, ivy- uh…

When they are both full grown

They have grown fully…

Of all the trees that are in the wood

There are very many trees in the wood, and out of all of them…

The holly bears the crown

The holly is the best, the highest and most important of all.

O the rising of the sun

The sun rises in the east every year

And the running of the deer

Deer definitely run…fast…

The playing of the merry organ

Organs are wonderful instruments. They play merrily.

Sweet singing of the choir

If they’re on tune…

The holly bears a blossom

A beautiful blossom

As white as lily flower

As white as snow

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

A wonderful story.

To be our sweet Savior

A great thing.

O the rising of the sun

And the running of the deer

The playing of the merry organ

Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a berry

A great berry. Beautiful.

As red as any blood

Blood is richly red, so..that ought to be really red…

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

True, true, true…

To do poor sinners good

Very true. The best thing that has happened to us.

O the rising of the sun

And the running of the deer

The playing of the merry organ

Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a prickle

As sharp as any thorn;

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

On Christmas Day in the morn.

O the rising of the sun

And the running of the deer

The playing of the merry organ

Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a bark

As bitter as any gall;

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ

For to redeem us all.

O the rising of the sun

And the running of the deer

The playing of the merry organ

Sweet singing of the choir

The holly and the ivy

Now both are full well grown,

Of all the trees that are in the wood,

The holly bears the crown.

O the rising of the sun

And the running of the deer

The playing of the merry organ

Sweet singing of the choir

Okay, this isn’t working that great…the lyrics are good and understandable if you read them through. They’re very interesting and definitely have meaning, but me explaining it is obviously not the best idea. Maybe…hmm…as it is Christmas Eve, I would like to type up something interesting about Christmas, but have naught a word to say. Rightfully, I could just say that I love Christmastime, although I’m not exactly into the Christmas spirit.

We made gingerbread houses tonight and mine doesn’t look all that great…it’s a little sloppy…

Back to the Christmas spirit thing. It’s really weird, I thought I would have gotten it by now, but I haven’t gotten it yet. I mean as I type this, it is 11:49 P.M. Almost Christmas. Where is the spirit?

I feel that this season has been melancholy and boring compared to others I’ve had. ;0

Over and Out.
